Making Our Opponent

Indifferent to Bluffing

We often think ouropponent should not be able to profitably bluff. When this occurs,

there should be somehands in his range that are +EV to bluff while others are -EV. In

these cases, ouropponent is required to bluff hands with the right equity for his bluffs to be profitable.

Heres an example. A playeropens in the cutoff and only the button calls. If the flop

comes the Q76, the cutoff will almost certainly be ableto profitably bet the T9

since it has fourouts to the nuts, can catch a running flush, and can also turn a winning

middle pair. This isalmost certainly a profitable bet against an optimal playing

opponent.

Much weaker hands, such as a pair of deuces, are not likely to be profitable as a

continuation betbecause they only have two outs to a set. The small pair also should not

be able to doublebarrel bluff the turn effectively since it cant pick up additional outs and is unlikely towin at showdown with just a pair.

A player whoconsistently bluffs with the right hands is randomizing well, and this

player makes surehis range is balanced by bluffing with hands which have the right

equity. This giveshim the best chance of getting lucky with his bluffs and outdrawing

his opponent onfuture streets. Notice that this player bluffs in a random way that is

determined by thehand hesholding and the board texture rather than if he simply feels

like bluffing.

In this book, whenwe say wewant our opponent to break even with his weak bluffs,it

will usually mean wewant him to be close to indifferent between check-folding or

bluffing with theworst hand in his betting range. That is our opponents best bluffing

hands are clearlygoing to be profitable since they have the best chance to improve on

future streets orthe best removal effects. However, in many spots, the worst hand in our

opponents theoretically correctbetting range should only be slightly profitable.

If a player folds somuch that his opponent can profitably bluff anything in his range,

this will often (butnot always) tell us he isnt defending as aggressively as he

theoreticallyshould. For instance, imagine a player folds so much to flop raises that his

opponent canprofitably raise the flop with any two cards. His opponent will simply

never fold becausefolding is 0 EV whereas bluff-raising yields a positive EV. (We will

discuss when it isacceptable to allow our opponent to make a profit by bluffing with any

two cards in futurechapters, but there are many situations where a player should not be

able to profitablybluff with any two cards.)

Lastly, note its often possible totake two lines which have the same expectation againstan optimal opponent. Forinstance, we may find ourselves holding a bluff catcher on the river where callingand folding both have an expectation of zero. Against an optimal

opponent, it wont matter which line wetake since hell never change his strategy to

exploit us. Butagainst any real opponent, calling too frequently encourages him to stop

bluffing whereasfolding too frequently incentivizes him to bluff too much. So its

important to remainbalanced against good opponents even in spots where the

expectation of bothlines is the same against an optimal opponent (unless you are

planning to reverse strategy in the future).
